Ronan Sauleau graduated in electrical engineering and radio communications from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées, Rennes, France, in 1995 (summa cum laude). He received the Masters degree in electrical engineering and telecommunications in 1995 (summa cum laude), the Agrégation degree from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, France in 1996, and the Doctoral degree in signal processing and telecommunications (summa cum laude) and the “Habilitation à Diriger des Recherche” (summa cum laude) degree from the University of Rennes 1, France in 1999 and 2005, respectively.
He was an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Rennes 1, between September 2000 and November 2005, and between December 2005 and October 2009, respectively. He has been appointed full Professor at the same university in November 2009. He conducts research at IETR, the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications of Rennes (www.ietr.fr), where he is co-leading the Antennas & Microwave Department (90 people).
His current research interests are numerical modelling in electromagnetics (mainly FDTD), EM optimization (development of CAD tools), millimeter-wave printed and reconfigurable antennas (MEMS antennas, soft materials, micromachined antennas), lens-based focusing devices (analysis and synthesis), periodic and non-periodic structures (Fabry-Perot antennas, electromagnetic bandgap materials, metamaterials, passive and active reflect-arrays and transmit-arrays), and biological effects of millimeter waves and pulse signals.
He has seven patents, and is the author of over 85 journal papers and 220 publications in international conferences and workshops. Prof. Sauleau has supervised 17 PhD students, 42 MSc students and 9 post-doctoral fellows. He has been involved in numerous industrial and collaborative projects at the national and European levels (5th, 6th and 7th framework program) with various companies and agencies (e.g. TRW, CEA, France Telecom, Orange Labs, Thales Communications, Thales Alenia Space, Thales Airborne Systems, French Defence Agency, French Space Agency, etc.). He has also been involved in many international co-operations and currently coordinates the Network of Excellence Newfocus (http://www.esf-newfocus.org/) from the European Science Foundation. Prof. Sauleau received the 2004 ISAP Conference Young Researcher Scientist Fellowship (Japan) and the first Young Researcher Prize in Brittany, France, in 2001 for his research work on gain-enhanced Fabry-Perot antennas. In September 2007, he was elevated to Junior member of the “Institut Universitaire de France”. He was awarded the Bronze medal by CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) in 2008.
